Slow But Good (2007-10-04)

I’m a big scary movie buff. I’ve always been one of those strange adrenaline freaks that enjoy having the crap get scared out of them.
My most recent addition to my scary movie collection was 1408, a movie which is set inside of a seemingly “haunted” hotel room, where more than 3 dozen people had died. The hotel now refused to rent the room, but after lots of hard pushing John Cusack convinces the hotel to let him stay in 1408 for one night.
I really like John Cusack as an actor, but this movie’s storyline was too much like Identity, (another one of his thrillers where he is seemingly trapped at a motel). The movie was INTENSE. Not so much actually frightening or scary, but just intense, edge-of-your-seat painful heart burn.
Now, I’m brave when it comes to movies. Everyone has their own way of dealing with theatrical-driven fear. I noticed all the different ways this week as I watched the movie at the Maverick.
The lady in my same aisle, four seats down from me covered her eyes throughout all of the scary parts- my question to these people is why do you pay money to see a movie that you’re just going to cover your eyes in?
Then there were the two middle aged gentlemen behind me, who laughed nervously at all the frightening parts, as if to assure themselves that they weren’t actually scared, (they’re real men, after all).
You then have your "I don't want to hear anything" folks, who cover their ears, for we all know that a scary movie isn’t actually intense without the creepy music! There are your squeezers, who squeeze the person next to them, themselves, or their chairs to assure themselves of some stability, and then there’s me. The chronic snacker. I am always sure to stock up on snacks before a horror film, so whenever I get scared, I pop food into my mouth, as if this somehow distracts my senses from the fear.
The plot was creative, but this was the type of movie that seems to go on FOREVER. It NEVER ended. Which I hate. The movie was just “ok”. Not bad, not amazing. I’d recommend it only to those weird horror-movie buffs like myself, because it’s something new that you can brag to everyone that you actually saw, because none of them wanted to pay to wince for an hour.
