A Rooster! Growing Pains (2007-12-10)

If you are looking for a typical and enchanting happy-ever-after kids’ or young adults’ fantasy flick, don’t look here. While I do enjoy those kinds of movies myself, I do find much more movie fulfillment in those diamonds in the rough that impart stirring and profound messages and hit a little bit closer to home. This movie is refreshingly cathartic and the profound yet simple plot was something I definitely did not expect. The movie depicts the growing pains of Jesse Aarons, the only son in a rather struggling family of 6, where only the daughters seem to get any love and attention. As if this wasn’t bad enough, Jess has to deal with the school bullies and his clingy but loveable little sister. Finally, things start to change when he befriends Leslie, the tomboyish new girl at school. Starring Josh Hutcherson (of Zathura fame) and AnnaSophia Robb, the script is well acted and I very much enjoyed the depth of character these kids added to their roles. The special effects aren’t the greatest but that’s not what this movie is all about. Awesome Drama – Check; Imaginative Fantasy and Adventure – Check; Great movie – Check. What are you waiting for? Check this movie out now! You may enjoy the soundtrack, too.
