Not Quite There (2007-10-01)
Last summer at the county fair, I was a judge for the Rhubarb Pie baking contest. We only had two entries because Emma Cloderspoon was visiting her son in Maryland and perennial Rhubarb champion Fretta Mullins dropped out this year when her rhubarb patch was invaded by ginger slugs. Anyway, I sat down and cut a big piece of each pie. They both looked good. The basic ingredients were about the same, but the difference was immense. (I bet you don't know a lot of Iowa farmers who say "immense" very often. I saw it in my Reader's Digest last week.) The first pie was delicious. The rhubarb was tart and sweet and the crust was crisp and flaky. I loved it! The second pie, however, was not even close. It was rhubarb, but something was wrong. Too much sugar ruined the flavor and the crust had not been cooked long enough. Obviously, the first pie won the blue ribbon.
I bring this up for a reason. Over the holidays, I took my granddaughter Meg and her friend Nikky to the movie A Bug's Life. A few weeks before that Meg and I saw Antz. Both movies are animated films about insects. Antz, as you know, was a rooster. But A Bug's life used WAY too much sugar aimed at little children and didn't spend near enough time on the crust, or script. It had a few good moments and the girls thought it was funny in parts, but overall it was disappointing and left me longing for the first pie. If you are choosing a bug movie to watch, stick with the Blue Ribbon winner and for heaven's sake, stay away from Starship Troopers.
