Get Ready to RUMBLE! (2007-11-25)
Ridley Scott does not let you down. The Scott brothers (Ridley and Tony) ate the right stuff growing up because they are skilled both at directing and even at producing good TV (Num3ers).
I saw this movie with Gomer and my brother Butch. I walked out feeling a little let down by the pacing and storyline. As Gomer will tell you, I need my movies to move and shake. But after we argued for a few moments and Butch called a "Fail-safe" I realized that this was a good show.
The story itself was not that impressive, but the acting, sets and cinematography were spot on. Having two titans of the film industry face off was great. I only wish Washington and Crowe had more scenes together. It reminded me of having De Niro and Pacino together years ago in "HEAT".
If you like movies, do yourself a favor and take a gander and this puppy. It will have you crowing in the morning.

American Gangster (2007-12-06)
|
Growing up in rural Iowa doesn’t offer much insight into the criminal lifestyle. Doyle Bluffs is full of friendly, law-abiding folks, not gang members and mafia bosses. Our town is surrounded by wheat and corn fields, not by graffiti and factories. So it’s always a new and exciting experience to watch a movie about this lifestyle. American Gangster offered the usual good acting and the intense thrill of other crime dramas, but added an extra spin. In American Gangster, you surprisingly find yourself cheering for the ‘bad guys’, for the movie focuses on two main characters: Denzel Washington’s, the leader of his own drug cartel, and Russell Crowe’s, a cop with a pretty sketchy personal life and friends. This film switches the usual roles of the sketchy drug dealer and the family man cop until you find yourself disappointed at the end when Denzel’s character gets caught.
Definitely a rooster- I would suggest this movie to anyone who enjoyed The Departed, Law and Order, or Alpha Dog.

Overhyped (2008-10-24)

I was told American Gangster was an epic gangster movie in the tradition of the Godfather. Nothing of the kind. Instead it is another cliched and mediocre urban gangsta flick. (More)

Based on the True Story of Frank Lucas (2008-10-18)

It's Harlem, 1968, and "Bumpy" Johnson is speaking to his driver and right-hand man Frank Lucas (the amazing Denzel Washington). Bumpy laments the loss of the middleman in business, the jobs lost to... (More)
