A Fun Escape (2007-10-04)
I came in the other night from planting beans in the north field to find my wife Bunny cooking dinner in her swimming suit. She was cooking a pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and gravy. I could also smell some fresh green peas and the hint of chocolate brownies was in the air. I stood at the doorway and watched my wife of over 40 years do her kitchen dance. She gracefully glides from the stove to the table, to the sink and the fridge, back to the stove and then all over again. I couldn’t help but chuckle, however, to watch this dinner waltz unfold with my 63 year old wife wearing a faded yellow one-piece swimming suit with green frogs plastered all over it. She bought the suit on our visit to the gulf coast nearly 10 years ago. It fits her nicely, but it didn’t fit with the situation. She caught my eye and smiled a hello. With a slight tilt of her head she gave me the sign to sit down to eat. I couldn’t quite figure out my feelings. It was odd that she was in the suit, but I didn’t mind it. It didn’t diminish my dinner experience, but I couldn’t figure out why she was dressed this way.
As I carved on my tenderloin I felt a familiar idea come to mind. The night before, I drove to Pine Junction to pick up a part for my tractor. They have recently built a new movie theatre in Pine Junction and since our movie house in Doyle Bluffs burned down last summer, I haven’t seen a movie in months. They were showing a new film called A Knight’s Tale. It is the story of a young common peasant who longs to change his fate and become a knight. The movie stars newcomer Heath Ledger as our hero. Ledger played Mel Gibson’s son in The Patriot last summer. The story follows this young man as he uses the art of Jousting to win the girl, win over the crowd, defeat the evil villain and win the respect of the people.
Funny sidekicks, cheesy humor and slow motion action scenes bring this tried and true storyline to life. The interesting issue with this film, as with my wife cooking in her bathing suit, it that something was amiss. The answer for this in A Knight’s Tale is quite obviously the sound track. When a movie, set in the 13th century, begins with the rock group Queen’s “We will, we will ROCK YOU!” you know this in not your average swashbuckling film. The peasants are dancing, singing and pounding to the words. Much of the language was current lingo, and the dance scenes were straight out of FAME, but the movie worked. It is targeted towards young adults and this hip use of music will keep their attention.
Doing something a little different can be quite refreshing. The fun soundtrack added to the enjoyment of this film and Bunny’s swimsuit was actually a nice change of pace. But I’m sure you are wondering about Bunny’s attire, just as I was at dinnertime. Well, before I could ask her about it, a freezing shot of water burst upon my neck and the giggle of my grandson Norman echoed through the kitchen.
“Water pistol?” I asked Bunny calmly. “Water CANNON is closer to the truth!” she replied.
The second shot on water caught me above the ear, and I realized it was time for old Ira to do some jousting of his own. A Knights Tale is a fun escape and the kids will really enjoy it. It may not be what you are expecting, but enjoy the experience anyway. I give this film a calm rooster.

For very little kids, or young girls who want to look at Heath Ledger. He died but that didn't improve the film.
History is so boring. It needs to be jazzed up? (More)

The movie is FUNNY. The movie doesn't pretend to be historically accurate, so don't go there if that's what you want to see.
