Pig! Pig! Pig!

This Corn Doesn't Grow (2007-10-02)

A good farmer would know better. You would think that after over 30 years farming the movie business that Robert Altman would have a better clue about his trade. Just because you have a handful and fresh, golden corn, does not mean that the rooster will follow you. Altman spread his Cookie's Fortune corn on the ground and waited. No rooster would touch it. It was artificial. It looked good, but had no smell and no nutrients. No cow would touch it because it had no flavor. It was left to the pigs and they devoured it. They don't care what it smells like or tastes like. They eat anything, no matter how nasty. Cookie's Fortune had a good cast including Glenn Close, Chris O'Donnell, Liv Tyler and Patricia Neal, but it moved along way to slow and only managed a few smiles from the crowd. The story is about the quirks and relationships in a small southern town. It tries to touch on the way small towns live in their own little world, but the weak plot drug everything else down. If I wanted to snore through an afternoon in a small town, I would walk around Doyle Bluffs. Don't waste your time. This corn doesn't grow. Oink.

A Cow

Bow-legged Cow (2007-10-02)

Cookies Fortune was not a great movie, but going to see it with Ira was like listening to a cow give birth. The lack of action made him moan through the entire movie. In Ira's book, keeping people from seeing Cookie's Fortune is a heroic public service. Now I feel that to get a Pig rating, a movie must have virtually no redeaming features. Cookie's Fortune has a quirky humor to it that makes it almost tolerable if you like slow, cute, quirky movies. Unfortunately, this movie is one of those that you keep waiting for something to happen - and then the credits roll. If you decide to rent Cookie's Fortune (don't waste your money at the Theater), get something else with it. If it does not grab your fancy after thirty minutes, rewind it and slap in Raider's of the Lost Arc (for the twelve time). That will cure what ails you. Cookie's Fortune is a spindly, bow-legged Cow

A Cow Coulda Been Much Better (2007-12-04)

3.5 stars I like Altman a lot on occasion (Player, Nashville, a few others), and not so much at times, like here. This could have been tighter, and despite nice turns from Close, Tyler et... (More)

Pig! Pig! Pig! Altman's COOKIE: I Hated It In 1999, and I Still Hate It In 2007! (2007-11-16)
