A Rooster!

Belgian Blast (2008-02-16)

In Bruges is my favorite film of the New Year. I wasn't even going to go to his little indie. My friend Ray thought it would be fun and we stopped by the mall in Des Moines to catch it during our visit to the John Deere dealership. With a handful of roasted pecans and a big pretzel, I sat with Ray to see if a film set in Belgium would catch my fancy. Clever and witty, it follows a couple of doomed hit men as they hide away in a small Belgian village to await their fate. The acting was fantastic and the pacing and dialog really made this film an experience. Collin Farrell, I thought, gave his best performance to date. He showed more range and vulnerability than he has in the past and is complemented by the ever fantastic Brendan Gleeson, he put on a show. Ralph Fiennes was fun as the hitmen's boss but the star of this movie was the Belgian town of Bruges and the fierce disparity between vacation and reality. This movie won't be for everyone. The language is harsh and the violence blunt. I did think the overall film was fantastic and I'm happy to endorse it as a Rooster.
