Opposite World (2007-12-28)

Given that Ira is a wise and intelligent man, I am convinced I saw the opposite movie, if that is possible. He was turned off by the trailer and thrilled with the movie. I was excited by the trailer and bored at the movie. There was something about the pace of this movie that was wrong.

Fred Whiteshank, our paper boy, and I went up to Des Moines to see the movie and to get Fred a new pair of boots at "Rustlers Supply" downtown. Fred's parents are having a little hard luck right now so I though he could use the day out. We choose "The Golden Compass" from the rest of the holiday movies because we both like fantasy.

Nicole Kidman played a great conflicted, evil control freak and we both liked the special effects and the Polar Bear battle, but even 15 year old Fred thought the story telling was a little dull. Some combination of the direction and script were just off.

The speech at the end was just dumb. Ok, we get it. There's going to be another movie. My advise is to rent this one when the new one comes out. If the new one gets good reviews, go see it at the theater the next day. You'll save a bunch of money and be just as happy.

Well Done (2007-12-26)

The Golden Compass is really a neat movie. I enjoyed everything about it. I'm a big fan of the Lord of the Rings films, Narnia, Harry Potter and the like. This film was extremely well done. I had seen the previews a couple of weeks before I saw the film and I must say I was a bit turned off. The movie turned out to be a hit for me. Always good to have Mr. Bond as one of the leads, though Daniel Craig's character was not much more than a cameo. Nichole Kidman did a fine job as the evil villain and the Polar bears were spectacular. The breakout star of the film was Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra. She is incredible and worth the price of admission by herself. She is a firecracker with sass to spare. Get out and watch this movie. Rooster

A Rooster! The Golden Compass Review (2008-07-25)

I hadn't read the novel before the movie, so I enjoyed the condensed version on screen, but my teenaged son lamented that so many parts had been left out from the book. It's nearly impossible to... (More)

A Rooster! Amazing (2008-07-25)

Pros: Excellent story, amazing animation, fast moving, realistic story given that it seems to be based on a re-mix of our own history. This is a replacement for Harry Potter since that story... (More)

Pig! Pig! Pig! In The Not-Too-Distant Future... (2008-07-25)

Once upon a time, there was a show called Mystery Science Theater 3000. The premise of this show was to take bad movies from bygone days and riff snarky comedy off of them. Watching MST3k... (More)
