Sheep Dip (2007-10-02)

I was only about 12 years old, playing with my sister at the local Cattle Barn when it happened. We were jumping from stall to stall, playing tag or follow the leader. We would run along the top of a 5 foot fence and jump up onto the roof of the cow barn. The tin sheets were hot and we quickly scrambled over the top and jumped into a large pile of hay. One day, I tripped over a loose nail and fell from the roof. Down the hot tin I flew and then off the galvanized iron. My heart sank as I realized that the hay was not beneath me, but the vat of sheep dip was. SPLASH!!!! The reason I bring up this story is because the movie I just left with Gomer reminded me of that day. The film was exciting, just like running over a roof. The movie had many scenes of fast paced adventure that gave you the sensation of a thrilling fall, but you also left feeling sick, not unlike being dunked in sheep dip. The smell, the embarrassment, the disappointment. Lost in Space could have been good. Once again, like many remakes of old TV shows, it used the basic theme but lost the flavor. This movie tried to take itself much too serious and got confused between action adventure and kiddy movie. There is however, a silver lining to my movie outing. Gomer and I were visiting the New Multi-plex 40 theater in Omaha. Gomer, who can't hold his Mountain Dew, got lost coming back from the bathroom and sat next to a little old gal two rows in front of me. He didn't notice that it wasn't me sitting next to him, until he grabbed a handful of popcorn and took a slug of her drink. Watching him squeal when she slapped him upside the head and pulled out her mace was much more enjoyable than the film. "Lost in Mace" if you will. Even if you are covered in wool and have lice, it would be best to stay away from this sheep dip. Oink!!!!!!!

I Wanted to Like It...but (2007-10-02)

Perhaps the problem with Lost in Space was that it was too true to the original show. The old show was campy and silly by today's standards. The movie is campy and silly by today's standards.. I think the difference is that the original show knew it was stupid and the movie did it without trying. Ira, Bunny, and I went to Universal Studios a few years back and Ira was picked from the audience as the Klingon Commander in the 'Make Your Own Star Trek Episode' show. A man who has spent as many years in the sun as Ira looks a little like a Klingon. After getting dressed up and with three minutes of rehearsal, they did their episode. Now I can't say it was because Ira was a natural for the role, but that five minute play episode of Star Trek was more fun than Lost in Space. I wanted to like Lost in Space. I went expecting to like it. I even gave it a second chance after the first half was pretty worthless because I wanted to like it. It defied all my efforts. It's a pig.

A Rooster! AS A BIG SCREEN REMAKE, NOT SO HOT - AS A BIG BUDGET SCI-FI EXTRAVAGANZA - PRETTY GOOD! (2008-04-16)

Hated it in the theaters (We were big fans of the 60s TV series and like most fans of the show, felt the film didn't do the series right.) Funny though, when we got it home and decided to watch it on... (More)

A Rooster! Wow, This Was an Unexpected Treat : Five Stars (2007-10-05)

First of all, I am a huge fan of anything sci-fi. That said, chances are that if you liked "Serenity" and "Firefly", and if you could imagine those movies/shows with a lot more humor and camp, then... (More)
