It's Magic (2007-10-02)

What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun." These are lines what have been repeated over and over since they were written by Shakespeare nearly 400 years ago. Anyone who knows Shakespeare at all knows the power of his words. But where did they come from? What was his inspiration? In the case of Romeo and Juliet we get our answer from "Shakespeare in Love." The movie starts with Shakespeare as a struggling playwrite in dingy 16th century London. He is working on a play entitled "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter", but can't seem to make it come out. He finds a muse in beautiful Viola and the result is magic. The cast includes Joseph Fiennes (Elizabeth), Gwyneth Paltrow (Sliding Doors, Emma), Geoffrey Rush (Elizabeth), Colin Firth (Pride and Prejudice), and Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting, Armageddon). Gwyneth Paltrow is a honey and you couldn't help but love her, but I thought that Joseph Fiennes was the standout. I had the pleasure of watching Romeo and Juliete at the Utah Shakespearean Festival last summer so the story was fresh in my mind when I saw the movie. The play was great and so was the movie.
