A Rooster!

I Left Feeling Satisfied (2007-10-04)

It is now a tradition that Bunny (Ira's wife and my sister) and I take our mother to a movie on Mother's Day. She was a little under the weather on the holiday this year so we didn't get out until yesterday. Her choice was Tea with Mussolini the new movie staring veterans Cher, Judi Dench, Lily Tomlin, Joan Plowright, and Maggie Smith - all superb actresses. "Tea" is set just before and then during WWII in Italy. It is the story of the lives of three "mature" English women and two American women and an Italian boy they undertake to raise in this turbulent time. The average age of the other movie-goers in the theater was just north of 70. My mother said that was a sure sign the movie was good, but I was a bit worried. Luckily, my concern was short-lived. Tea with Mussolini was well acted and well directed. The story was reasonably good and it moved along for the most part. I left the theater feeling satisfied, but not sure whether I had just seen a Cow or a Rooster. My mother set me straight. Let me start by saying that Emelda Hinkle is not a woman to be trifled with. At 81, she still regulary drives a tractor around her small farm outside of Doyle Bluffs. When I told her that I was unsure of how to rate "Tea" she told me in no uncertain terms that "it was a ROOSTER and you'll call it a ROOSTER or I'll take you out to the woodshed!" Mom still chops her own wood, so this is no idle threat. Ladies and Gentlemen, "Tea with Mussolini" is a Rooster. If you haven't done so already, I suggest you take your mother to see it.

A Rooster! Well Worth the Watching (2008-06-01)

I'm a sucker for this type of movie. The acting was superb; the scenery very interesting; the colors and video crisp and appealing; and the story good enough. This is more a character movie than... (More)

A Cow The Most Beautiful Bad Movie You'll See (2008-01-25)

Zeffirelli's artistic eye is evident here; there are tableaux strewn about the movie that are wonderful gems, visual little treats of costume, design, and Italy. Unfortunately, you'll have to... (More)
