A Shock to the System (2007-10-01)
Gomer and I went down to Spirey Corners last week for some corn feed and a 50 gallon drum of tractor fuel for my old John Deere. We noticed that they were playing Saving Private Ryan at the local showplace and dropped in for the 7:00pm show. Now I've never seen any action myself but this film takes the viewers to new depths of understanding the horror and violence of war. The movie starts out on Omaha Beach during World War II and hits the audience over the head with hideous authenticity.
Comparing this film to other war movie experiences is very difficult. This is not a dental story you heard from your cousin Sue about her new crown. This was a power drill in your own mouth, with pieces of tooth and blood and a very noticeable lack of novocaine. This movie slaps you in the face with gore and terror. It never lets up.
Tom Hanks and a super cast of young actors give superb performances. The story itself was intriguing and well shot. The movie was breathtaking and it haunts me still. Not a day has gone by in the last week that I have not thought of it. It pains me. My initial reaction was disappointment in all the detailed carnage and blood and guts. But as I thought more about it, I realized that my reaction was covering the fact that I was horrified by the reality of the film. I REALLY DID NOT want to know the truth about war. The movie succeeded.
It is not a movie for the weak of heart or stomach. It is painful to watch, but passes though to your very soul within five minutes. Speilberg proves again his skill at delivering the goods. Few films have caused more inner turmoil or active discussion. Rooster.

The Horror of Battle (2007-10-01)
The general premise of Saving Private Ryan has all the makings of a fun movie. A team of cool guys goes to rescue a brave young man. Brings him back alive. Lots of action, lots of fun.
That is not what Saving Private Ryan is about. Yes, the story is about bringing back a young man who is behind enemy lines, but it is far from fun. I did not "enjoy" seeing Saving Private Ryan. I wasn't mean to. However, at the end of the movie, everyone in the theater who saw it knew what it was like to be on Omaha beach. As they filed out of the theater, everyone was silent. No talking. No whispering. The effect stayed with me for several days.
Saving Private Ryan is not for children or for anyone who is squeemish. Your first reaction is to be angry that Speilburg would subject you to such violence and gore. Ira swore that he would write a nasty letter, but after reflection understood that the violence was the POINT of the movie. This is a movie about the horror of battle and it delivers.
Bunny (Ira's wife and my sister) argued that everyone should see Saving Private Ryan because it would deter us from war. Saving Private Ryan is a rooster, but think twice before going to see it. If you do, you will never forget it (and you may want to).

D-pressing (2008-08-23)

I know a lot of people consider this some kind of classic, but I find it to be one of the most depressing films I've ever watched. I'll take "To Hell and Back," "The Big Red One," or "Sands of Iwo... (More)

Nothing Else Compares...except Band of Brothers. (2008-07-18)

The best WWII film ever made. I've got a bunch of other movies in the genre and nothing comes close to the realism and the quality of the film making. There is an aura to this movie. The way the... (More)
