A Wonderful Time at the Movies (2007-10-01)

The thought of moving 60 musty bails of hay from the loft in the barn, down to the south pasture is not pleasant. My old bones creak just thinking about it. But on the Crabtree farm, you do what needs to be done, year in and year out. That’s life. Now Gomer has other thoughts. He does only the bare minimum of chores to survive and any time he can put something off, he does. His motto is “Don’t put off today, what you can put off tomorrow.” That Gomer. Well think of my surprise this morning when I walked down to the barn and found Gomer hard at work moving the hay bails. He only had 4 left when I arrived and it was only 7:15am. “Gomer, what are you doing?” I asked in complete shock. “Ira, I’ll be done in just a minute. We are heading out to play Golf with Gus and Jed and then meeting Markus Blasphom for your favorite lunch down in Corryville. After a nap, Markus will take you to a movie and then we’ll all go fishing until dark. Bunny is baking you a three level chocolate cake and the boys are coming over to sit on the porch and play cards until bedtime. What do you say ole buddy?” BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!! The alarm sounded in my ear. It was a dream of course. I should have known it was too good to be true. Gomer volunteering to work! HA! It was a fairy tale. Where did I come up with that? It only took a moment to figure it out. The night before I went to see the movie Shrek while Bunny was at her knitting club. The computer animated film, about an Ogre and his sidekick a talking mule, was spectacular. I don’t remember the last time I had so much fun in a movie. Mike Myers was the voice of Shrek and Eddie Murphy the voice of the mule. The show is hilarious. I have not laughed out loud this much in years. This is absolutely a “MUST SEE” for the whole family. There are many subtle adult jokes but also plenty of fun for the kids. Some of the jokes border on “potty” humor, but overall it was quite outstanding. The colors, the characters and the jokes were consistently strong. The writers had a field day with this film. Scene after scene was funny and clever and cute. Murphy was superb and the evil villain, voiced by John Lithgow gave me quite a tickle. A chorus of Roosters sings the praises of Shrek. Grab the family and go see this gem. (And give Gomer a call and tell him to come over and help with the hay.)

Turning Over In His Grave (2007-10-01)

Walt Disney must have turned over in his grave when Shrek was released. With state-of-the-art computer animation and the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Dias, you would think that you were going to see a Disney animated film. At the least, you would expect a Disney-formula knock-off. Don't get me wrong. With few exceptions, I like Disney's animated movies. But I also like surprises and I like to laugh. Shrek provided both in huge quantities. I have not laughed so hard and so often at a movie in a very long time. And I wasn't alone. I heard people of all ages laughing in the theater where I saw the movie. Some of them laughed so hard they could hardly control themselves. At the end of the movie the entire theater applauded. You have to really love a movie to applaud at the end. The actors aren’t there so they can’t hear your applause. In this case, the actors weren’t even real. Shrek uses a few of the typical modern fairy-tail themes. Ugly is beautiful if you are beautiful inside. No man (or ogre) is an island. Bravery and friendship are always rewarded in the end. True love prevails. But the rest of the movie is one long effective joke at the expense of the Disney formula. I loved watching Shrek and I’ll be buying the DVD when it is available to see it again and again. Cock-a-doodle-doo. Shrek is a rooster.

A Rooster! Love's True Form (2008-08-20)

A Rooster! A Masterful Tale. (2008-06-27)

Shrek is a very clever movie, shrek two is even more clever. Too bad the film makers are running out of ideas by part three. Oh well, at least we have part one which will always be a classic.... (More)
